Thanks Goodwill!
This Thanksgiving I want to thank Goodwill. Doesn't everyone have a Goodwill story? They have impacted more people than they keep up with! Not only did I walk for them in September for the 33nd Annual Vintage Fashion Show, they helped me get my first job when I was 20! See, me and Goodwill go waaay back. 😄
I wasn't always self-employed, in fact, I started off as an Entrepreneur at age 18 when I moved to sunny San Diego. It was so hard to find a job there and I had NO EXPERIENCE. So I ended up starting a home-based business and kept at it until my ex-husband discharged from the Navy in 2014. YIKES! I definitely needed a job at that point lol. However, I didn't really want one, I felt that I was called to entrepreneurship, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I'll tell you more about how I got started in my business ventures in future posts. Subscribe so you can get them!
After spending some time in our hometown Memphis, TN to plan our next steps, we decided to move to Nashville. The job market was booming and he found a job within a week! Me? Not so much. All I had on my resume was my home-based business (business development, affiliate marketing, sales, etc) and some volunteer work at the American Red Cross. Soooo, basically I had NOTHING on it besides a high school diploma. 😂 What was I going to do?
I can't remember how I came across Goodwill Career Solutions but I read that they could help me gain experience and find work. I took a Microsoft certification workshop, and had resume building courses. They made my resume worth looking at lol. Every time I would walk into the career center I was greeted with smiles. My career counselor was awesome, she got to know me and my needs and desires for employment.
Now here is where I made a deal with God...
I told the Lord that if I was going to humble myself and work a job, then can I pleeeaaassseee avoid fast food restaurants? 😓 no offense but I don't like working around food and they usually pay less. I mean, if I'm gonna change up then I can at least have a preference right? YES. God's grace allowed me to bypass fast food. YAY!! But who in the heavens was gonna offer me employment with my level of experience? Can somebody say...faith? lol
After two weeks of getting my life figured out, my career counselor met me at the front desk with a job posting I didn't really qualify for, but they needed the help. It was a temporary full-time position for a major fundraising company, and they needed more Payment Processors for the winter season.
WELP, I said okay, we'll see if my lack of experience gets me this one. AND I DID! I was so happy and so nervous to have my first job. After two weeks of being a client at Goodwill Career Solutions, I was a full-time employee for a major fundraising company. WOW. Look at God. It was so much fun working at that job, it was like the best of Corporate America I had ever been apart of (I can say that now 2.5 jobs later). I begged them to give me a permanent position but sadly, I was temporary and had to leave after a few months.
But GOD IS FAITHFUL, my cash experience I gained there led me to getting a permanent full-time position at a Bank Vault. I was hired there ONE WEEK before I was let go at the fundraising company. So I was never really unemployed after that, and I'm so thankful to God for blessing me with Goodwill Career Solutions. If you're struggling to find employment, or you'd like to gain more experience for higher job placements, I recommend you to check out what Goodwill Career Solutions has to offer!
